Do I really need an agent to find a 4-month appartment in Munich?

I'm hopefully going to be an extern at the Ratskeller from July to December and I need a place to stay. I'm supposed to make about 1200 EUR/month and I need a good price on a place fairly close to work so I'll have enough money to pay for insurance and airfare and such.

  1. Congrats on the job - it's a very fun and interesting city.

My suggestion:  get in contact NOW with the hotel and maybe you can put up a "classified ad" in the kitchen.  Maybe a young girl is leaving and can give you her room, or maybe someone in the staff can help you out.

Rooms in the city cost a fortune, and living outside means train fare (which isn't all that bad).

If all fails, try the university area - there are surely LOTS of 1 room appartments in the area.

Tradionally at jobs like that, rooms are "passed on" to new collegues.  Frequently the people/person in HR can point you in the right direction.

  2. I would find the Munich city website and see if there is a real estate link.  I was able to find a very nice, fairly inexpensive apartment for my paerents to stay in using this method.  Most Germans know enough english to be able to work with you.  Good luck!

  3. Agents really help. Have you considered roomates. Most owners of apartments in germany do not speak english or actually may choose not to. anyway. Many things such as lease, repairs, trash, utilities, etc. will be handled by agents.

  4. Hi,

agents are expensive, but yes they help.

You might try on your own, but if you don't speak German its almost impossible.

A good place to look for apartments is here:

  5. I think, it is wise to contact an agent, who is specialised in part-time rentals.

    Some links are:

A former collegue of mine did this here in Hamburg für 4 months,

the price was good and the appartment centrally located.

have a nice day and I keep my fingers crossed that you will find a good place to stay

    K.
