Question:

Do I still have to pay insurance even when I'm not driving a car for a certain amount of time?

Me and my dad are always having a dispute about a whole car situation. One of his concerns is still having to pay for car insurance while I'm at college, where he said most likely won't allow freshman to have cars on-campus. This is probably a stupid question but... Can you like discontinue insurance or something like that? Any way like that possible?

  1. Some states do NOT allow the insurance to lapse at all.  In NYS, I would have to return the plates to suspend my insurance.

I suspect different states have different law, and you should check with your DMV and/or insurance company.

    Good Luck...

  2. He needs to talk to his insurance agent.  Most have a situation where if you are living at the college, and it is a minimum number of miles away (200 maybe?  It may vary), that they bump you down to a lower rate.  But if he takes you off the insurance completely, then you can't drive the family vehicles ever until he puts you back on, and you may be at some sort of risk driving other people's cars too.

    Talk to your agent.

  3. You should still keep coverage on the vehicle, even while it's parked.  If you remove it and it's parked, if a hit/run accident occurs, your vehicle will not be repaired.  It is also true on a comprehensive claim (tree limb falls on your car, vandalism, etc)

  4. My son is leaving for the Marines, and will not be able to drive for awhile.  State Farm will put a hold on his policy for that period of time.  I'm sure most insurance companies will do the same, whether it is for boot camp or school.  Just be aware that you will not have ANY insurance if you come home for a weekend or something.  Don't risk driving without insurance coverage.
