Question:

Do I still need to heat up my winterized home?

I am planing to winterize my vacant home in Connecticut this winter. However, the plumbing company that winterizes many homes in my area says that I still need to heat up my winterized home. Does this sound right? I thought the whole idea of home winterization was that you could turn off heat and electricity in order to save heating cost and avoid problems from power failure. Can anyone with good experience in home winterization confirm that it is OKAY to turn off the heat and electricity in a winterized home? Thanks!!!

  1. I seriously doubt that Connecticut gets much colder than Michigan, and I winterize at least 10 lake homes, cottages each winter for folks that live out of state and don't want the expense of heating the house to keep it from freezing.   I shut them down completely, water all drained, antifreeze in the drains, utilities turned off, electric is usually left on, but if there's nothing to run it doesn't hurt if it goes out for a few days during the winter months.

  2. You need to winterize your pipes above the frost line
