My dad has recently passed away. My legal name was exactly the same as his, plus I have Jr. at the end of my name. What happens to my usage of Jr.? Do I stop using Jr.? Is it just up to me?

  1. legally, yes you can.  Some don't for some reason out of deference.  It is up to you.

John D.Rockefeller, Jr. said there could only be one John D. Rockefeller so he never dropped the Jr.

  2. I believe you can continue to use it or not.  However, for future generations to research their family lineage, it makes it easier if you continue to use Jr. on your name.  Besides, what better way to honor your dad than to always let everyone know you were named after him.

I'm sorry for your loss; I still miss my dad.

  3. If you have a son and name him III,you will become II.If you decide not to have children or do not have any sons you can still choose to use the II.But you will always be Jr.

  4. Its use has always been at your discretion. Other than Social Security and the IRS, no one will notice if it's there or not. You'll have to maintain your employment records consistent with the name on your Social Security card. You'll have to file your taxes with the name on your Social Security card. Other than that, you're a free agent on the use of Junior. Of course, should you have a son of your own, he can become Tre....III...and keep on the tradition...also giving you a reason to be doubly proud of your own Jr status in between your dad and your son.

  5. Is the "Junior" on your birth certificate?   If so, then it is part of your legal name and you should continue to use it.

If you stop using the Jr, future genealogists will get confused about who was who.

  6. No, and Never.
