I have it all hooked up for my 5.1 surr system to my AV Receiver, but do I use the optical cable, which I already have, with the HDMI or does the HDMI feed do the surround sound, all this is for a PS3.

  1. As far as I know you need both the HDMI and the optical cable for a PS3 to get both sound and picture. It is an incompatibility issue between the HDMI and the receiver.

  2. If your A/V receiver has HDMI inputs, you do not need to use the optical audio cable.  The audio comes in on the HDMI.

  3. it depends. does your receiver support hdmi pass through?

if it does then you will need both the hdmi cable and toslink.

if it doesnt, then you just need the hdmi.

  4. You need optical cable if your receiver not compatible. What is the model of receiver ?
