Do Illegal Immigrants drive un-insured just because they choose to?

Apparently, the laws were designed to ensure that anyone driving in North Carolina, whether in the state legally or not, was familiar with the rules of the road and had auto insurance.

But, allegedly in an effort to crack down on "terrorism," the state tightened its laws and eliminated several acceptable forms of ID. In 2006, applicants for driver's licenses were required to have a valid Social Security Number or visa.

That means that illegal immigrants now have no way of renewing their driver's licenses. To legislators, this may have seemed like a great solution to illegal immigration: if immigrants didn't have any way of getting around the state (they must have figured), they'd leave and attempt to reenter through legal channels.

They made it to where illegals cannot renew their drivers license and cant get money from their bank and yadda yadda, but that's a crock because I for one know that they have their ways. I grew up in California there is just simply too many of them to not be able to survive. They steal or use other peoples names and SS numbers. Trust me they are getting their money some way. So, yeah I believe they choose to drive without insurance. If they can find ways to cash their checks, buy cars and get a job then they can find a way to get insurance. Many of them are still on the road driving with their expired license they just haven't been caught. The way I see it the government doesn't care about our safety on the road or rather we would be covered if an accident shall happen because if they did they would at least allow the immigrants to have some form of insurance rather they have a license or not. Better yet they would find a way where everyone who lives in America would have to buy insurance up front included in the price of the car as far as the ones being sold by private sellers I'm sure they can think of something. Honestly this just seems like they are hoping to push out a number of immigrants and force them back in legally so more of them will pay taxes or whatever. llegal or not there are still a lot of drivers out there with no insurance. If we have to pay for insurance then they should find a way to force everyone to not make us pay more because someone else "can't" get insurance. Thats my opinion.

Illegals choose to drive unisured by choice.  They are used to doing whatever they please in their unpoliced, third world country.

Solution:  When an illegal gets into trouble (accident etc), send the bill to their home country.

Yes,they've already broken the law by being here so breaking further laws is no big deal to them. Besides that,they don't want to pay for anything so insurance is just another bill they don't have to be bothered with.

No, illegal immigrants do not drive un-insured just because they choose to. They are basically forced to because without documentation they are limited in the things they can do. For example, at one point in time an illegal immigrant from Mexico could use his Mantricular Consular card or birth certificate to get a regular state ID. Now, they have to have all sorts of documentation (I-9, SS#, visa, etc.) in the state of North Carolina.

Personally, I would rather them have the State ID and there be some sort of documentation of just how many undocumented immigrants there are in the state. Otherwise, they drive around un-insured AND without any form of ID. Then, when an officer pulls them over they are simply written a ticket for driving without a license and the officer moves on. The undocumented immigrant never goes to court - opting instead to mail in the fine. Thus, the corrupt gov't continues to make money. It's a really crappy system that someone needs to fix. Better to legalize the immigrants who are here - having them pay retribution for coming illegally - and then focus on border security, etc. instead of running around like chickens with our heads lopped off, offering miniscule options (such as the one stated in the article) that really only cause more problems in the end. It's like trying to throw water on a grease fire - really dangerous.

Impressive thinking, well-thought out.  Up to this point, I haven't really thought about this subject, so I had no ideas about it one way or the other.

But having read through this, it makes quite a bit of sense.  It just continues to show that the best way to help yourself IS to help others.  Well done.

This post is so full of it your shirt collar is brown. Yes the d**n Illegal aliens choose to break our laws all the time. They chose to do so when they broke our laws and entered the country without proper documentation. They have continued to do so with identity theft, driving uninsured, without licenses, selling drugs, and stealing anything not chained down.

Illegals aliens should have a bounty on them just like coyotes. Then a lot of country boys could make a living off of the Illegal Aliens.

If  I used faked ID to identify myself to law enforcement officials I would be arrested and charged with a felony. If I tried to open a bank account with fake ID the IRS would be after me for failing to report income, a felony. I pay property taxes to build new schools, due to over crowding, though I have no children attending the district, if I don't pay there will be a lien on my property.

Why am I being forced to obey and follow the law just because I am an American citizen. Can't I just pick and choose what laws I want to follow?

Yes,it is a choice they make. They also make the choice of driving without a license even though that is illegal too. Why do they seem to think it is ok to do either?

If they would follow the laws of the country and come here legally,they wouldn't have these problems. They have no right to be on our roads in the first place if they aren't here legally.

I don't understand why we are supposed to have sympathy for them.

It's not true that they cannot have auto insurance.. There are several insurance companies where I live that offer insurance to anyone with a liscense from any country. My husband never had a problem with getting insurance.
