Question:

Do International Organisations have any real power?

When you think about it, when the world is always going to be locked into a power struggle and with that a constant global hegemony to go with it will the UN, ICJ and ICC etc have any real power? Think about it, when America (or the UK for that matter) don't have to abide by UN resolutions, or when Isreal ( America's ally) can repeatedly ignore U.N sanctions and resolutions (regarding the wall they are erecting in Palestein) is there going to be any real point to International Organisations? Only when the world is one (in a global world order, if you will) will there be any real power and authority befhind them. Opinions/thoughs anyone?

  1. Which?

  2. While I agree that there needs to be reform within the United Nations, this has been evident for awhile. The United Nations is not the only International Organization on the global stage.

I think an example of an IO that does have power is NATO. This is an international organization that has the ability to send troops and aid all over the world and has done it successfully in the past. Regardless, of your opinion on the organization I think that it is a prime example of power within an IO.

The European Union is also considered an International Organization and that does have very real power. It has the power to change currency, enact new law within the EU, and has become a voting block within other IO.

Another example of an IO that definitely has power would be OPEC. I really don't think that there is a need to give examples for this one.

So, while the U.N. at this time may not have any real power there are definitely organizations out there that do have power on the global stage.

  3. Most international organisations have little power to enforce any resolution. As an example during the past 60 years the UN could not enforce any resolution regarding the peaceful existence of the modern Jewish State, the State of Israel. After 60 years various Arab states and terrorist organisations still conduct war and terror against Israel. UNSC resolution 1701 clearly demanded the release of the Israeli hostages and to stop all hostilities. Israel pulled out from Gaza and Lebanon but the terror goes on and the UN has no power and will to stop it. As a result both the Jewish and Arab population in the area suffer.

  4. Ho please ''when the world is one'' Good God and who well lead this one world of yours? That would have to be a wise and insightful people hmmm who might you have in mind hmmm Ho yes why you Brits How silly of me Why y'all really know how to lead [Kyoto] and keep everything together [lost empire] And produce a product the world needs [Concorde and A380] And make others talk with each other and work things out [Argentina] And keep crime in check [London]

  5. This may not be of help but to suggest that all nations put The Human Right to Peace in the constitution or equivalent of such  for the citizens of each nation this could at least provide more backbone outside of International Organizations. The Human Right to own The Planet and conserve natural resources could also be of use.

  6. The UN seems toothless!

If we pay to belong we are wasting our money.

Our country's 'bosses' behave like a lot of bickering kids. "I can have it, you can't have it, don't do that" and no-one takes any notice.

  7. yeah they do....the POWER TO SUCK

  8. It appears to me that they don't.
