In the UK (which includes Northern Ireland), British, Commonwealth and EU citizens can access free health care (for essential health care - some procedures eg some cosmetic treatments are only available privately).

There are charges for eye & dental checks and for prescriptions, but these are subsidised by the NHS and if you are a UK or EU citizen on a low income you get extra help towards the costs.

Emergency health care, eg after a road accident or a heart attack, is available free of charge to all.

I don't know about Ireland, but England has the National Health Service. In theory it's free, but many people have to pay for services like dental work, non-hospital prescriptions and other things. If you also need work done soon (as in under 6 months or whenever the health authority's target is), having health insurance pays off bigtime.

Also, it's only free for UK residents and certain others - if you're travelling here from abroad, you WILL get billed so ensure you have a good travel insurance provider and get private ward treatment.

ha! no-I wish! I dont know about England but where I live in Ireland its incredibly expensive. I wasnt there 5 minutes last time and I still got charged €50-"standard rate". I'm only 17 and I hate going to the doctor's because I dont like my parents paying out so much every time. and the doctor usually prescribes something which I'll have to buy in the pharmacy-that can cost anything between €15 and €50. it's absolutely ridiculous, I think under 18s at least should get free health care. If you're on social welfare you do get a medical card with which you can get free health care but otherwise you really have to be careful. even when I feel sick I'm so reluctant to go to the doctor, its always the very last resort

The UK, including Northern Ireland do have a (nearly) free health sevice, Ireland has one only for the poorest people.

Everybody on the minimum wage is already liable for their full health expenses, although you can claim tax back.
