Do Jamaicans dislike African Americans?

My husband is African American, I am White and Native American. We have been together 24 years and have 6 beautiful children, 3 girls and 3 boys. We have done alot of research on moving abroad and have chosen Jamaica as the place we want to raise our children. We have a close friend who is jamaican and she has told us about how warm and family oriented most Jamaicans are. We want to live in a beautiful place with beautiful people. However, we have heard from others that most Jamaicans do not like African Americans. I hate stereo types and I know that you cannot make a blanket statement aboout any one group of people. I know that there is ignorance to be found anywhere in the world you go. But we are looking for a place where people see who you are inside, your personality, your spirit and not the nationality, skin color, or where you came from. So I need to know, will we mostly be welcome or mostly prejudged?

As an African-Amercan who was born/raised in South Florida, I 've always found it peculiar that:1. 'white' americans ask me of my origins/ethnicity.2. people from other countries ask me of my origins/ethnicity. The questions always come after they get to know me personally. They say I don't 'act or speak black'. I was once told  that  I  "must be West Indian because you don't act like them. 'Fact is, I hope that I do "act like them"; that is, my parents and the hard working African American families that made up my post-segregation community in late 60's/early 70's. I am not an exception to the rule. I used to say that people would see one black car thief, and not see one thousand black teachers.(time to stop rambling)

Final thought: the slave ship dumped some of us off to the south, and dumped some of us off to the north. So, if I have Caribbean blood in me, you have A A blood in you!

I am an African-American woman who will be visiting Jamaica for the first time this spring. The comments on this forum has made me a bit nerous about a trip I was so excited about. Although this will be my first ti to JA I have traveled to Africa and have noticed that some things that I was told were not true. I was embraced with open arms by my African sisters and treat way better than I have been by my AA sisters. B4 then I had always been told that Africans do not like African-Americans. I am sure that my experience with be the same in JA.

Us females have a tendency to be mean towards each other just because its in our nature to feel threatened by other women.

Also while I do respect people different opinions some of these comment are just ignorant and does not help the situation. To the mixed-raced person who hates AAs. I am very positive that you can find the same type of people within your JA family as well. You have some unresolved issues inside that has nothing to do with ethnicity. Thats just people in general.

Also the person that is half Jamaican and half African American is the dumbest person on earth. She states she hates African Americans. Jamaicans do not hate African Americans or anyone else for that matter. We were raised to see people as individuals regardless of the colour of their skin. Most of us have grandparents or parents of mixed ancestry even though in some cases you cannot tell by just looking at us. Indian, African, Caucasian from different countries, Asian, you name it most of us have a little of something or a cousin or friend who is. I have three half chinese cousins,some half east indian cousins and my mothers side of the family has alot of green or blue eyes. My daughters grandfather is white. We just see people we love. Some Black Americans sometimes make jokes about the way we speak or say things about the country we are from without visiting. This will offend anyone and so some Jamaicans may just avoid dealing with them for that reason. You just need to listen to a Black comedian and you will see what I mean. There are many people from other countries living in Jamaica. As a matter of fact in the southern part of the Island from I was young I knew there were more than one area called German Town. Need I explain? Take Sean Paul our reggae artist. He is chinese, sephardic jew and black. Maybe I am missing something. Anyhow what I teach my daughter is love and thats dominantly what Jamaica stands for. Check it out.

to be honest i don't think it would be smart to have a general concept about this, but to be honest I think that it is still out there and I say this with personal experience. I think that with SOME Jamicans they do have this kind of rivalry between african-americans and i do believe it's Africans aswell. From what I hear it has something to do with slave trade but then again it's just rumors. If i were you i wouldn't completly ignore the fact that it could still be out there cuz i strongly believe that it is, just not with all Jamicans,because again, it wouldn't be smart to generalize a whole race.

im jamaican and i love all races
jamaicans are beautiful and friendly culture of people
i would have to admit christianity has a dominating presence
in jamaican politics and the whole culture
for this reason some jamaicans dont believe in g*y but will never harm g**s
we are a developing country and thats the only real issue jamaica needs to overcome and we are taling drastical steps and improving.
but afterall christianity was forced on us to begin with by the english.
now they tell us to through it away and its so disrespectfull to us to controll our beliefs.
blame the shepherd not the sheep.they are the ones who enforced anti-g*y relegion on us for 100yrs.
it takes time to deconvert and we are only doing it cause we care for our homosexual brothers and sisters.

Well I'm half Jamaican half African American and let me tell you I cannot STAND African Americans. They always have something nasty to say in your face. Highly confrontational and have no control of their mouths. Jamaicans can be catty but on a whole are more accepting and peaceful. Both are homophobic which I hate. But if you move to Jamaica make sure to keep a leash on that husband of yours.
