Or is it only plasmas?

I have a 16:9 HDTV and a lot of the movies I watch have the black bars on the top and bottom. I am worried about the burn-in from them. I have an LCD. Should I be worried?

  1. Short answer: No. By the nature of the LCD, it cannot burn in. There is no possible way for it to happen. Also, though plasmas can burn in, they are no more susceptible to this than a standard old tube television. If you never had a problem with burn in on a regular television, you most likely wouldn't with a plasma either. Burn in only happens when left on a static image for very long periods of time. This is another one of the great plasma myths. But, long story short, LCD screens will never burn in.

  2. Yes, LCDs do burn in, but you really need to try hard to have permanent burn-in; such as operate them continuously for more than 500 hours.

Long-story-short, as long as you turn them off for 6-8 hours a day, you allow the liquid crystals to reset and you have nothing to worry; but if you abuse an LCD, yes it can get permanent image retention.
