Question:

Do Life Insurance Agents work long hours?

I am currently working as a route salesman for a beverage distributor. I work from 5 a.m. to about 6 p.m. most days but am off on weekends. I understand that agents do have appointments in the evening, but don't they also take time off during the day to make up for it? Would I still be working the 65 hours a week or so?

  2. Depends on how you start out.  If you find a niche you could end up working very little.  I work almost no evenings (I think once so far this year) and I don't leave the office for appointments....of course I started ~16 years ago and found my niche long ago.

Even though you're working very long hours I'd see if you could get set up to work 4 nights a week from 6-9pm to try it out.  The insurance industry has tremendous turnover and although it's very lucrative and rewarding very few make it.

You're going to want to learn about vesting schedules and the differences between an agent and a broker.  I have a blog on my site entitled "If a broker is better than an agent, then why isn't my agent a broker?"   Read that so if you do get a job you don't regret it later.

    Good luck,
