I'm going to South Africa and I hear the wild animals roam around freely, is this true and if so should I try and get some sort of repellant when I go?

  1. Just whatever you do, do not dress up as a zebra or buck...so many tragic stories coming out of these kind! Repellant, well, some pharmacies sell really dodgy ones! So just be careful.

Guns are always good. Otherwise have a 'knobkierrie' with you. Don't worry, the locals will provide you with one!

  2. Only after rush hour, smear yourself with mayonaise... it works for me. But I do however have two pet Tigers...they act as bodyguards and ofetn fight the lions in Central Johannesburg. You should buy an Ox when you get here, they're a great mode of transport and kick lions to death when they attack. Bets of luck hey?and enjy your stay

  3. watch animal planet and you will find the answer there

  4. Yes, every South African walks around with a stick of "Msimang's Garlic and Beetroot Paste".

It keeps away elephants and aids.

Also our Government consists half of fat cats and half monkeys.

    (Geez, catch a wake up!)

  5. lol

  6. Some of them go hitchhiking!

  7. yip they do. just becareful because some farmers like to feed people to lions.

Don't worry about repellent , once you see one for the first time you won't smell like food to him !

  12. I have a pet lion in my yard.

You can try to use water as a repellant this might work

  13. Well, since lions and other wild animals do live in Africa, I believe it's safe to say that they do roam around freely. You probably won't need a repellant. Just keep a safe distance.

  14. There are far more wilder animals that walk around the streets in South Africa.

They tend to hang around the Taxi Ranks.

  15. Take someone with you that you can outrun.

  16. They sometimes dress in aerobatic monkey suits with mini jets implanted in their arses.'

I reckon you won't need repellent. If you're friendly to them, they'll be nice to you, too!

  17. Yip , they do but as Fuzzy Wuzzy pointed out , a good lion repelent should do the trick , however the Shongololo's are the most dangerous and there are no repelents for them at the moment , but the sangoma's are busy working on one...

Also watch out for the Tokoloshe's , they are nast buggers....

  18. Nakynak, Speak for yourself! lol. I have 4 beautiful ones at home. Only problem is that I have to buy a new couch every other week. You should hear them roar for their food.

  19. Yes animals roam freely in the streets of Johannesburg and Cape Town.  Make sure you don't lock your rental car doors and hotel rooms, because the turn of a key attract wild animals.

Usually you should wear expensive jewelry very visible, the shine will repel these animals.

When you stop at a traffic light, make sure your windows are wide open and your wallet, cellphone and passport are lying openly on the passenger seat, the sight of a flashy cellphone scares animals and for some reason they don't like the smell of passports.

Luckily it's not all bad, there are still loads of gold nuggets lying around openly in the dusty streets of Johannesburg, you can pay for food and accommodation with it in the main wooden buildings of hotels and makeshift supermarkets that is basically sheets hanging from trees.

  22. Tie a large, raw, T-bone steak to each side of your head and pick up one of the lion's cubs to use as protection...

    That should work.

  23. You can buy lion repellent at most chemists (pharmacies) In South Africa.

Tiger repellent is harder to find.

  24. Guys - this is real - this is what is told to people outside South Africa...

No it is not true - lions do not walk freely in our cities and towns.  Most of the wild animals are in nature reserves.  Although there are still wild animals on farms going free.  But you do not need to carry a gun with you to kill lions attacking you....

When my daughter was an exchange student in Germany three years ago, she was more than once asked if she rides an elephant to school.
