It depends, if you're a well established novelist with connections & know the process & steps from getting started to marketing out your novel thn. you don't need an agent to help you/manage it.

Else it will be wiser to have an agent to guide you especially in terms of legal laws, copyrights & marketing issues.

Basically just think of it like you want to be a singer, but do you need an agent to represent you to the world?
