  1. Malaysian trumpet plants will eat dead leaves or decaying plants, apparently they don't eat eat live plants.

They are also said to be "a valuable and useful resident of aquariums"

As for your question about their usefulness:

QUOTE: "After dark they come up out of the gravel and spread across the tank, performing their janitorial duties.  MTS eat algae, including hard-to-control hair algae.  They also clean and aerate the substrate, preventing pockets of anaerobic bacterial formation, which can produce deadly Hydrogen Sulfide gas.  Their burrowing keeps the substrate loose, but they don’t disturb even delicate plant roots."

Check out this great website dedicated to this lil' creatures:

Sorry I haven't kept them (personally I prefer apple/mystery snails), but I am happy to do some research.

    Good luck :)

  2. I have a bunch of them, and they do not eat any of my plants.  They'll crawl on them, and eat little algae pieces and what not, but not the plants.  My opinion-yes, I think they're good snails to have.   I have sand substrate, and they burrow in the sand during the day-which is beneficial to the plants as well by stirring up the substrate, and they come out to eat at nighttime.  That's also another plus if you have sand substrate.  They're great at getting rid of algae as well.
