Do Mexican taxis usually accept American $?

I'm going to Cancun tomorrow and I was wondering if taxis in Cancun usually accept American money or will I need to exchange for pesos?

The reason they MAY prefer dollars to pesos is they can give you a terrible exchange rate.  That means 10-30% more for them.  Your change will be pesos and don't try anything bigger than a $20

Anaid 27 don't answer questions that which you know nothing about.  I live on a border city and I know first hand that Mexico gladly takes American currency but it would be wise to exchange it for pesos so that you don't get ripped off.  Plus if their is change you may end up with pesos and the math becomes confusing.

American dollars are accepted all over Cancun Mexico. No need to exchange $$ into pesos.

FYI....the exchange rate is about 11 pesos to a dollar. Almost even exchange. Ask how much the fare is in dollars before getting into cab.

ABSOLUTELY.

You might have a hard time with taxis in Mexico City or other central cities, but positively no problem in Cancnun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco!

Oh heck yes! They prefer dollars to pesos...just be sure you know the exchange rate or you'll get ripped off...we were just down on the Riviera Maya and the cab drivers frowned when we offered to pay in pesos...they would take the dollars and give the change in pesos...made it hard to figure out they exact cost..I'm sure they were coming out ahead.

BE SURE you know the cost before you get in the cab.  

you are also expected to negotiate ... not the same as in US , where tabs are flat or meter rates.   they have their own discretion / can charge whatever they want

agree to rate in dollars    - know what the exchage rate is .. you pay a little more in exchange rate  / but hotels jack you the most.   better rates at the bank .. unless you find someone there who will agree to better rate.

In Cancun we didnt find anywhere that did NOT take american money - just make sure you understand exactly how much you are going to pay BEFORE you get in the taxi.  American/Pesos - make sure it is very clear.
