  1. Charlie is right in the sense that you don't need a passport when you enter Mexico, as long as you provide proof of Mexican citizenship (the documents listed in the link above).

    But, if you are embarking a plane/ship in the U.S., then U.S. Immigration officials WILL require a valid passport to let you board. This does not apply for land travel.

No, you do not...If you are returning to Mexico from the U.S. by LAND or AIR or from Canada by air.    See site below and enter your nationality as Mexican and destination as Mexico , then click for the info.   It will give you specific info on the I.D. you must have if you do not have a passport. Mexican citizens who left Mexico may definetly return to Mexico without a passport.  However, it is  very wise to get a passport before leaving Mexico again.  If you are flying back, you may also call your airline to verify this.
