When in Rome,it seemed that I was the only person on the Tram that had a ticket except for two Japanese Tourists. Am I correct that Romans don't buy tickets or or they all have some kind of pass that they buy?

  1. Lots of people have monthly passes (which by the way are very cheap) but even more people don't pay.

This happens because noone bothers to check, and that's because transport is not private as in London but  public, which means it is financed mostly by taxes and not by tickets sold.

  2. A lot of people scam the trams and some buy monthy or annual passes... everyone is supposed to pay!

  3. Of course in all Italy there are cards (montly or for year) at different prices regarding the revenues.

If you are student you have usually a cheapest one.

And there are as well cards for regional or national bus and trains and boats at different prices for workers and students.

I'm in Naples and I too use a year card.

Don't you have something like that ?

  4. They either have passes or they are trying to beat the  system. Sometimes officials get on and check and being caught without a ticket/pass has a costly fine!

  5. I'm italian and I live in Rome, I always buy tickets, but 90% of the italian that take the bus they have a year or monthly pass, that's why you don't see them stamping the ticket.

Now they incresing the controls and putting new access gates at the metro stations.

  6. I live in Rome and I have a monthly card

  7. I AM ROMAN,

and i confirm you that many people here don 't buy bus tickets, because there are not  controllers that check for their tickets, so people simply don't buy it.

of course, many of "civil citizens" have got a ticket card.

the centre of the city is more controlled than the periphery.

  8. ...it's a shame but is very usual in italy...and not only in rome...

everyone who pay a ticket feels really stupid because of the lack of control as well...but that's the way it is...

  9. A lot of locals have a much reduced season pass.

The fines for not either having a ticket or endorsing it can be gruesome.

  10. They should buy tickets but in most cases they don't I the city has been trying to crack down on this by having officials ride some buses and asking for tickets but its very rare. If you get caught without a tickets its a on the stop ticket you must pay.

  11. I think most people buy them.  If you get stopped at one of the train stations and they are checking for validated tickets it's a50 euro fine on the spot or 150 later.  I haven't seen anyone not produce a ticket.  Ever.  If I was coming for a week though I would buy a settimanale.  It's much cheaper and good for all means of public transport.  These days I drive so I only use tickets.
