I've been receiving a series of Neupogen shots after each chemo treatment... but it seems like after the second shot in the series, I'm always depressed. Is this normal?

  1. I doubt it is the Neupogen.  I would think your depression is related to having cancer and dealing with everything that goes along with it.  Feeling crappy, tired, etc.   I felt the same way.   Sometimes what you think is depression during chemo is your body's way of saying take a nap and slow down.

  2. After completing chemo, surgery, and nearly done radiation, I have come to believe most people in treatment when they observe a side effect, whether or not it is well documented.

Best I can tell you is let your doc know it's happening. He'll probably tell you it's not related, but he will also note it in your chart and if more people complain of it, he may report it to the manufacturer.

I had Neulasta shots and the only notable side effect I had was the burning during the injection.

  3. I think you are just worn down by the treatment and the side effects of the chemo.  The treatments can affect red blood cells too and anaemia can make you really tired and depressed.

Talk to your oncology team.  Good luck.

  4. Depression isn't listed among the most common side effects of Neupogen.  You can read the patient insert that lists the most common side effects here:  http://www.neupogen.com/pi.html

I would talk to your oncologist; he/she probably would know more about whether the Neupogen is causing your depression or whether one of your chemo or side effect drugs might be causing it.  It is pretty common to find depression in cancer patients.  Take a look at National Cancer Insitute PDQ for some helpful information:

I'm sure your oncologist and his/her team have addressed this issue and can help you.  Good luck and hope you feel better.
