  1. The CHL (Canadian Hockey League; major junior) is comprised of the OHL, QMJHL, and WHL.

Players in these leagues are given a small stipend in addition to being provided with billeting during the season.

Players chosen to represent team Canada are not given any additional monies for national team duties but are provided with travel expense reimbursement.

  2. The WHA is a defunct semi-pro league which I am sure the players got paid. However if by WHA you mean WHL which is a junior league, then yes players in Canadian Juniors do get paid. They are mostly paid "peanuts", however their goal in these leagues is not to make money, rather to get noticed by NHL scouts and hope to get drafted. I knew a guy that played in the QMJHL (the other major Canadian Juniors league not mentioned) that made around 400 bucks a week, however their food and lodging is all covered by the team.

Also of note the Canadian Junior leagues (WHL, OHL, QMJHL) are not considered "semi-pro". The semi-pro leagues in Canada are more for players that either weren't good enough to go to any other leagues after their Juniors career or have gone and played in other leagues but are now just playing in these semi-pro leagues because they have almost given up on playing hockey as a career.
