    The US Olympic committee pays $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze. During years in which the olympics are not held they are paid $6,000- $2,000 for placing in the top 8 at events such as the world championships or the Pan-American games.

    The US Olympic committee also pays for the health insurance and sometimes even pays for the tuition for the athletes.

    The athletes are also sponsored by companies like speedo (speedo pays Phelps $1 million for winning 8 gold medals
