  1. I have a really nice auto-knife(switchblade) that now sits in my locker because I found my Leatherman multi-tool to be more useful. Trooper is correct that knives are not part of the force continuum, but many consider them an option as "untrained but justifiable" if used as a weapon

In reality, the knives that Officers carry is more useful as a tool rather than as a weapon

  2. They don't they wouldn't need to a stun baton is good enough. you can strike and stun him like a Taser. A knife would just cause unnecessary bloodshed. It should be used last resort, and they just have a gun for that.

  3. Yes.  There are many uses for a knife;  probably more than the weapons you listed.

  4. Most have one in their pocket

  5. Some do, some don't.

Why don't they?  It takes up room that is desperately needed for other items.

Why do they?  Self defense, cutting a seat belt on a trapped driver, prying open a screen door to get to a person who is helpless on the floor of their home.  Etc. etc.  More reasons to, than not.  But lots don't.

  6. Most officers carry a knife so if they shoot someone they can place the knife intheirhand and say that he attacked them.

  7. Knives are not in the Use of Force Continum, which is why the main reason why some officers don't carry them. In addition, if an officer is disarmed of his knife by an offender, it becomes a deadly force situation. For this reason, some departments do not allow them.

They do come in handy for countless tasks, so most officers carry them if policy allows it. My knife is a combination window punch and seat belt cutter, and I use it frequently.

  8. I would think they'd be allowed to or a multi-tool, if for nothing  else to cut things like rope, or shirts to do CPR or things of that nature. If not issued, I'm sure they buy that themselves. To me, that would a logical reason why a police officer would have a knife. I'm not a police officer so I wouldn't know for sure, but I'd think it would be a good thing to have.
