Do Restaurants in Ireland offer dinner after 5:00 p.m.?

My husband, son and I are all traveling to Ireland mid-August and we've been told that all of the restaurants offer dinner around 4:00 p.m. and that if you eat any later you have to order off of a reduced menu. I was told that dinner is offered late into the nights at most pubs, but would like to get this cleared up before we leave. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Well most pubs would stop serving food at around 8 PM, 8.30 latest.

As for restaurants, they do start as early a 5PM with sometimes an early birds menu until 7PM. Then you can eat until 9PM or 10 PM.

This is valid for Dublin, no idea what's hapening in the rest of the country.

  2. In general, Restaurants start to serve Dinner from around 5 PM until ,usually, 10 PM. As always, there will be some exceptions but I don't think you have to worry.

  3. Dont worry you have been wrongly informed.

Pubs all over the country serve sandwiches all day.

Many pubs serve what is called bar food (sandwiches, chicken wings, burgers) till about 8 in the evening.

Larger pubs particularly in city areas serve carvery food, i.e. a buffet with roast meats and various vegetables.  This is usually from 12.30 during the day to about 2.30 in the afternoon.

Restaurants all over the country would all have similar hours.  If they open for lunch (and many do not) it would be from about noon to 2.30 or 3 p.m.

Evening meals start as early as 5 in some places.  Early bird meals are offered at a reduced price monday to thursday usually and from about 5.30 to 7pm. most restaurants would serve food till at least 10 and at weekends later.  They would have a full menu.

In cities you will have no problem.  A huge variety of all types of food and catering for all tastes.

In rural areas (villages and small towns) you will not have such a choice but there will always be somewhere, e.g. local hotel or just one restaurant in most areas.

Welcome to Ireland. Hope you have a great trip and better weather than we are having now!

  4. Well there is loads of different restaurant types! If you went for example to a Chinese, they might have a buffet Sunday until 2pm and after that it's the set menu. And normally Mon- Sat, they do lunch and after the set menu. It's the same with Indian etc restaurants.

In Irish restaurants you dont normally get breakfast served only lunch and after that it could be a A La Carte menu.

In Irish pubs you normally have breakfast(with a few pints!) and then bar food or lunch after that. Sundays some pubs do carvery.

I haven't heard of Irish restaurants reducing the menu or anything! Most restaurants are very accommodating anyway!

    Hope the answer helps!

  5. I think what you have been told is about a carvery dinner- this is a roast  dinner served in most pubs during the day and stops serving in the evenings.. restaurants usually stay open until late at night or early morning, because they also sell alcohol, so because of the bar licence, they stay open later.. in fact most restaurants usually don't get busy until 8pm ..

so if you want pub food, you can get it during the day, but after evening time, you can go to the restaurants..hope this helped
