Question:

Do Rhode Island drivers on the side street have to yield to people coming off the highway?

I'm in a debate with someone and I can't find the RI driving laws online anywhere that neither confirm or deny my side. I live in TX and I brought it up that people driving on side streets have to yield to drivers coming off the highway and she said it was stupid. Now I'm trying to find proof that either confirms or denies that RI must/must not yield.

  1. Starry Eyed is absolutely correct, as you are. It probably depends on the traffic and road condition at each exit, like the length of exit ramp. Another big factor is how much the local government cares to do the rite thing, like having their DOT put proper signage due to rising traffic counts. It's more than courtesy, it's common sense, she needs both. Imagine the danger of traffic backing up onto the interstate. Hope that "stone" softens up.

    Good Luck,  ;-)

  2. Yes all drivers on the side roads must yield to traffic that is coming off a highway............

    Update...............

    I called both states and this is what they said.................

    In Texas while exiting the highway the traffic on the side roads must yield to you.

    In Rhode Island while exiting the highway you must either yield or stop for the side road traffic which is very dangerous in my opinion.

  3. Cars that is IN TRAFFIC (going straight) have the right of way.

    Cars that are exiting the hwy have to MERGE onto street traffic.  So they (people leaving the hwy) have to wait.

    Any car that is changing roads do NOT have the right of way.

    Good Luck....

    === UPDATE ===

    I can't blieve the 2 people below.  NO wonder we have so many accident !!  The person coming off the hwy is SUPPOSE TO SLOW DOWN.  The speed has nothing to do with it !! OMG !!

    I live off of 3 GIANT hwy in NYC. OMG, I would know.  Cars that is IN TRAFFIC <<<<====  IN TRAFFIC !!!!

    Do yourselves a favor - just walk up to a street cop and ask before you kill yourselves.

  4. Do you think it is smarter/safer for the person who is on the side street , going about 40-45 mph, to yield to a person exiting the freeway going about 50-70? Yes, the person on the side street must yield to the person exiting the freeway.
