no, in any given size vehicle, they will use more gas than a comparable car.

for example,

large car, lincoln town car, 24 mpg hwy.  lrg SUV, suburban, 17 mpg hwy.

compact car, toyota corolla, 37 mpg hwy, compact SUV honda CRV, 27 mpg hwy

SUV's, for the most part, are very poor when it comes to fuel efficiency. Most any sedan will have better gas mileage than an SUV.

Of course not.  SUV's are for the most part the antithesis of fuel economy.  They are overly large and inefficient for what they do.

If you are comparing to some POS v8 car with 140 horsepower from 1978, they are better on gas even with more power and weight are are rated LEV or better, so they do run clean as well.

But, there are some that are decent on gas.  CR-Vs, Trackers, (Grand) Vitaras, et al.

No way! They are built like a small truck and consume gas like a truck. If you really want a gas-saver look at the sub-compacts. A lot of automobile dealers--I've noticed from TV and newspaper ads, now emphasize luxury and fantastic technology in their hard to sell models, i.e. gas guzzlers. Don't let them fool you. Do research. Go on-line and compare. At the library is a good book Lemon-aide for car buyers, or buy consumers' report magazine. A year ago, I saw all this coming and I bought a manual Honda Fit. Great little car. Do research if you can before midnight! But don't waste gas money on any SUV.
