  1. NO= LOOKING IS'NT HARMFUL TO ANYTHING

  2. The 'smoke' is water vapour. Rockets use hydrogen and liquid oxygen for fuel.

The only effect that satellites, outside of manufacturing processes, will have on the environment is the energy radiated at the planet for the purpose of collecting data. Typically radar band or microwave frequencies. Not sure what if any effect this radiation has.

  3. Slight bad effect, as the rockets used to launch them release a lot of smoke.

Once in orbit, the satellites cast a small shadow on Earth; I feel we can totally neglect this effect.

The information gathered by the satellites can be used to determine where oil is, where fishes are, and so on.

You decide if tapping resources thanks to the knowledge gained by satellite is good or bad. The satellite is only the messenger.
