  1. No, it's not because their planes are empty. (I've flown on them, so I've seen it first hand.) It's simply their business model. Travelers have made it clear that they want cheap fares. Anyone who works in the travel industry will tell you that customers will readily switch airlines to get a lower price. Spirit (and some others) are simply responding to the market.

Airlines with very low fares are nothing new. Southwest pioneered it over 40 years ago. Ryanair in Ireland took their model to a new extreme with dirt cheap prices, really lousy service, and extra fees for everything. It was extremely successful and others, such as Spirit, are copying it.

  2. Probably Yes and Probably No.

The competition among low-cost airlines is so strong that every competitor needs to adjust their prices all the time. So they must invent ways to create "promo fares".

Doing low-fares sales as you call it, is beneficial to both the airline company and the passengers. If they get the passengers it means more money, and the passengers in return can save few bucks for that.

It's competition actually not because they have no passengers or what, or they just want do it..because, its cheaper to park an airplane than to give out free airline tickets and let the plane fly for nothing.

    Its publicity for money.
