  1. truckers only get paid when their truck is moving.. when they are sleeping or anything.. they are off the clock..

  2. most truck drivers get paid buy the mile, not the hour. If the wheels aren't turning your not earning. As for overtime? Forget about it.

  3. Usually, if you are delayed more than 2 hours at a shipper/receiver/border, your company pays delay time.  This is usually the hourly rate that they would pay their local drivers.  Full documentation is required for your company to charge the offending party for your time.

Overtime just doesn't happen... unless you're running local/regional and in a really good union.  If you're a local driver in a non-unionized company, you won't see OT since they won't pay it until you're over 60 hours per week... and working local that's very hard to do.  The world of trucking runs on what seems to be different rules than the rest of the working world.  Sucks, but it's true.

If you do find a company that does pay OT... I can assure you they will do their best not to let you get close to that.

It's all about money... and with the cost of fuel these days, the companies are pinching pennies wherever they can, and it always seems to start with the drivers.

  4. Depends on company policy.

If you work for yourself (i.e. own/lease the truck), then you are solely paid by the amount of goods you move and how far they are moved. (You get your assignments through a long-haul company)

If you work for a transport company, then you are paid for hours worked and all that, with OT and meal breaks and so on. Though these guys usually only do local stuff.

FYI, truckers HATE getting paid by the mile.
