i don't meen to make fun of or condescend to the Turkish culture-- My ancestry is partially Turkish by the way. I realized when I was watching a Turkish folk music concert that the singer hisses at some climactic moments..

Is this common or was I just watcing something weird?

  1. i dont kno but i am turkish

and i would go to turkish folk concert and im not homosexual

  2. i think you were high and what kind of f*g goes to turkish folk concerts.

  3. if you mention whistling with the word "hiss" ; yes, whistling is used in some folkloric songs. But i can certainly say, it is very rare.. not common..

but the question at the title is different, i suppose.. do turks hiss (whistle) when celebrating? Sometimes, yes.. it's just like applauding..

  4. People are misunderstanding what you mean because the word hiss is usually associated with the sound of the snake, right?

But I get what you mean, people make the sssssss sound when they are folk dancing its their expression of their excitement/enjoyment...their ecstacy you could say....it also draws attention to specially figurative moves, also when there is syncronisation....usually expert dancers make such sounds not the general public....kinda like how the spanish flamenco dancers and musicianists make their "ayayay whistle" sounds...dont know what the proper term is, but the average dancers dont usually make such calls when dancing.

I have to admit though, I havent seen hissing in that way from normal singing perhaps if it was quite percussional?

For example: The singer Ibrahim Tatlises used to make a "chiki chiki chiki" sound when he goes off, but that's not a sound necessarily made because he's from turkey or because he is a Kurd, it's just his own idiosyncracy, if you know what I mean...

    hope it was helpful :)

  5. Hisses? No, sorry, not that I know of. Though in Northern Caucasian dances, men make noises like "usssssssssssSSSE" when they're jumping up and down which is pretty close to hissing lol
