I'm going to St. Thomas on vacation---will my cell phone work? If so, is it going to cost an arm and a leg to use it? What's the cheapest way to call the US from the USVI?

  1. It depends

  2. Your cell phone will work perfectly. The only carrier you may have trouble with is T-mobile

  3. SPRINT! only $90, but it cost me $300 to get the international phone. but it was totally worth it!

  4. I have sprint and my phone did work there. You have to call your service provider to see how much roaming charges will be. Sprint doesn't have roaming charges (or at least my plan doesn't) so there was no extra fees or anything. I'd just say to call your service provider, and if the fees are too much just get a calling card.

  5. Yes they do. My friend took his phone to the carribean and it worked.

  6. I dont know but I had a friend from st croix he would call me from there!!! and he used his cell in miami too and it worked but i dont know if U.S. phoes will...

  7. idk. sorry hehe

  8. Our cell phone worked pretty good in St Thomas. We have Verizon.

Call your cell phone provider for confirmation and ask about roaming charges and if you plan to use your phone alot what you can do to cut down on charges.

Good Luck and have a great trip)

  9. The cell phone companies tend to have a monopoly on phone usage on the Islands.  You may want to get a phone card, (like AT&T) and use a pay phone.  Rates are cheap.

  10. yes

    hope i helped.

       !good luck!

  11. You do not need an international plan to go to the USVI.  In fact, I recommend you do not get one for Caribbean travel. In the Caribbean it can be less effective than just expanding your roaming  capabilities to adapt to low service area. I have anecdotal experience across the Caribbean of two people using the same carrier having different results. The one using an international plan having severe complications.

For  The USVI 340 area code is considered national not international.

Now while you do not need an international plan,  all cell phones are not considered equal there . I had a Verizon plan a few years ago which is great in my home town but they do  not have enough towers in the USVI. Some place I could not get service at all, others I was constantly in roaming. I came home to a 300 dollar bill. I switch to Sprint which a great deal of the locals use. The other preferred carrier is AT&T which is horrible in my hometown.

Sprint/AT&T has absolute perfect coverage there.

If you have another carrier beside these two, I believe T-Mobile and Verizon will now provide greater service than years before but with roaming charges accruing during your stay.  Switch your plan to unlimited roaming and you should be fine.

For the Caribbean in general, many islands are too small to offer the full compliment of every service carrier you will find a similiar situation across the Caribbean. I So while Sprint and AT&T reign supreme in the USVI, go to Turks and Caicos and Verizon will be what you need.

  12. YES.... I've used mine in St. Croix just fine... it's not international, just a different area code.... ¥ay!!!!

§till... call your own carrier to be sure, or visit their website.

  13. Yes it'll work. You must call your cell provider to tell them and they will enhance your roaming capabilities on vacation. I called mine to get reception in Scotland, and it worked pretty well.
