Do UV filters work on digital?

In the comments in this picture the question is asked if the blue haze in the picture could be reduced and adds that in the old days filters would be used. Don't UV filters work on digital cameras? I've just bought my first digital camera (Fuji S5000) after using slides for 40 years and am very interested to know the answer to this.
