Hi =]

I struggle with bad anxiety when I start new things or am in unfamiliar places...usually i'm fine when i'm at the place but later that day i will panic about having to go back, even though i was okay being there. like the beginning of each school year [even though i have went to the same school since kindergarten & will be a senior this year] i have a horrible time making it through the first week, even though i've always liked school & never had problems fitting in or anything.

I started my first job this week & have been having panic attacks every night. i see a therapist and he said he feels that i should try and be put on medication temporarily because school is starting & i'm going half day to my school & the rest of the day i'm going to a career center, i will be with a bunch of kids i don't know.

anyway. i tried making an appointment but nobody can get me in before school which starts in 2 weeks. so i started looking into over-the-counter stuff and i found that a local CVS has Valerian capsules but i was just curious if they truly work? or would it be a waste of money?

even partial relief would be worth it to me.

  1. Yes,but as other sedatives don't drink with it and actually turkey is the best when you look at overall health and effect. The l-tryptophan  you hear about in turkey works because it has the ability to cross the blood/brain barrier and stimulate the pituitary gland so it helps you get a deep REM sleep. I always have deep intense dreams after eating turkey at night. All pills including supplements seam to never really cure the problem and increase the need for something stronger.

    One problem is that when you lack sleep you are never 100% awake and never 100% asleep. So it's important to get exercise ,if you are healthy enough to, so when it's time to sleep you are tired. A good workout releases dolphins in your brain,{I know they are called endorphins,but that's my little joke}, that relaxes the mind and promotes sleep in the day.

    Good Luck!

  2. Well, There has been much acclaimed successs to the use of Valerian to ease anxiety, and when used at night, to help promote restful and relaxing sleep.

    Along with Valerian, there are several other herbal solutions you could try:

    Hops (Humulus lupulus)

    Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata)

    Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora)

    I have been doing a lot of research on these herbs in the past few months, and I have found that those herbs tend to provide the best results to ease tensions, and relax you.

    Let me know if you would like to find out more info about these herbs, and I'll be glad to help you out.

  3. Valerian is used to calm the nerves and promote a restful sleep.  They work somewhat, but they're not a cure-all

    If you want to get rid of your anxiety and panic, you have to get to the cause of it. 9 times out of 10 it's a dietary issue: too much sugar, not enough protein, low blood sugar, etc.

    Follow this program and you'll heal your body

  4. Valerian works as far as getting a good night's sleep, but I'm not sure it would work to curb anxiety attacks.  I think it would be a better idea to immediately stop all forms of sugar (anything on the ingredients list that ends in "ose" such as fructose, glucose, dextrose, sucrose, maltose, etc.), honey, maple syrup, any form of sugar whatsoever, any form of high fructose corn syrup (check the ingredients list), and all forms of caffeine (coffee, tea, cola soft drinks, chocolate, etc.).  For me personally, along with sugar, I noticed that potatoes caused my heart rate to speed up.  So make note of things that speed up your heart rate and eliminate them from your diet.  For me, personally, I have found that oftentimes, anxiety, irritability and other mood disorders don't just happen because of some chemical imbalance in the body, but are purely and simply caused by what you eat.  Hope that helps.
