  1. i cant cook, but im good at cocktails. if u cook, i'll barter you some cocktails for dinner? ;)

  2. i used my grans recipe for a lovely curry :)

  3. Meals are much tastier cooked from scratch. Our microwave is only used for defrosting and occasionally reheating leftovers. I like making Spag Bol and roast dinners. For a treat we have a fry-up now and again, although it's bad for you!

  4. I cook from scratch...most sundays I make special dished like meat balls or new recipes that I get from on-line.

  5. I love to cook, but I don't hesitate to take convenient shortcuts where I don't think quality will suffer.

I suppose I COULD make mushroom soup, from scratch, but, I have no problem opening up a can of Campbell's to use in preparing various casserole dishes, because I know the quality is good and it will save me, at least, a half hour of preptime.

Same is true of frozen veggies, because I don't have time to keep going back to the store to make sure I have fresh ones on hand.  I WILL use fresh  veggies, but, as most people who know their way around a kitchen know, veggies don't keep all that long.  So, when I go to the store to pick up some fresh carrots, onions, celery and spuds, I also pick up a few bags of frozen peas and pearl onions, brussels sprouts and cauliflower so I have something on hand next week, in case I don't have time to go shopping.

I CAN mix my own barbeque sauce blend, but I don't usually bother when I can use any one of a variety of bottled brands that bring in flavors I have never tried.  I HAVE made my own bread, but there is no way I have time to do this every week.  The store shelves are full of all kinds of whole grain loaves and, (my favorite) San Francisco sourdough.

And, while I do, occasionally use fresh herbs and spices, there is no way I can always have a stock of all the varieties I use in my cooking.  If I need to put together a quick spaghetti sauce, a can of tomato sauce, some ground beef and gobs of diced onion and generous sprinkles of dried Italian seasonings can be blended in minutes and stewed on the back burner while I slather some sourdough with MARGARINE and sprinkle a generous amount of garlic POWDER and grated cheese to pop in the broiler.

I buy BOTTLED  wine, instead of stomping my own.  I buy bottles of olive oil instead of pressing my own.  And, sometimes a box of Hamburger Helper makes a yummy, quick meal.  I nice, crisp tossed salad added to this makes a great, convenient meal.

I can toss a couple of potatoes in the oven, along with a roast, or, I can microwave a couple of spuds in ten minutes for a snack by themselves.  The point is:  I have a choice.

So, there are many different ways to interpret "cooking from scratch."

  6. I cook from scratch, and freeze leftovers down so that if I'm in a lazy microwave mood then I know it's healthy :)

I love making beef stroganof, it's yummy :)

  7. Have to. Widower. Had to for my kids too when they were younger. I do cook a lovely roast, so my kids say, but although not a natural ( sometimes get the recipe books out) I do love to cook Lasagna using Fresh pasta. Melts in the mouth

  8. yes, every day, i am told that my best meals are homemade minestrone soup, big and chunky, and lasagna

  9. I love cooking from scratch, roast dinners, pasta, stews, Quiche all my faves.

Microwave used to part cook jackets potatoes then they go on over to crisp up, then they get opened all the potato goes in a bowl mashed with butter, cheese, whatever I want in it, then mash goes back in jacket then in oven to bron off mmmmmmm.

  10. i love to create my 3 gallons of spaghetti sauce for freezing to enjoy multiple meals. tonight i'm having chop suey made from scratch too

  11.   i cook from scratch  but not  to night i,m going out for a birthday

  12. I usually cook from scratch, but I make rice in the microwave

    (Uncle Bens).

I use fresh ingredients, from a local grocers, and healthy stuff (loads of veggies). I'd make sure you have balanced meals, with lots of protien-ie. soya, meat, dairy. Base your meals on wholegrain, wholewheat and oats. They use the whole of the grain, which has more minerals, and is good for your heart, eg, wholegrain bread, pasta, rice, porridge

It dosnt matter if you don't buy organic - nothing has been proved that it is better than GM food (genetically modified by using sprays, fertisilers, etc.)

Instead of frying, grill. It is less fatty, and the food tatses nicer! Home-baking is a great way of making healthy, delicous (and cheap) desserts. Try not to eat much with preservatives, colours, or anything that looks funny on the back of the packet. Anything high in salt is a strictly no-go area.

Fresh juice is a great pick me up if your rushing for work, or smoothies. Simply blend together any fruit (but keep the skins on, and resist peeling. They contain fibre, which fills you up, and most of the nutrients are concentrated in or just below the surface.) and add honey or plain yohgurt.

Include lots of fruit and nuts in your diet as snacks, try to get then unshelled and salted.

Heathly eating improves your body, AND lifestyle. And try to do half an hours exersise a day. Whether its cycling to work, or playing your fave sport with your mates, its doing you good.

  15. I came from a family of 21 and learned country cooking the hard way.  We raised our own produce, meats and dairy products and that meant learning how to can, butcher and preserve as well as how to cook it.  A substantial portion of our diet came from hunting and fishing.  Today I am a widower and am taking care of my family of seven which includes two disabilities and myself with my own medical problems.  I am a country boy but have been condemmed to a city slicker's life for a long time now.  I am amazed at how many people can think no farther than the grocer's shelf when it come to where their food comes from or what it went through to get to the shelf.  All my cooking is done from scratch.  Many of my recipes are over a hundred years old and were passed down to me from generation to generation.  Today we have a meriad of cook books and the food network to expand the experience.  I love it.  Now I can cook just about anything including somethings I am hesitant about putting in my mouth.  I love making Chili Reynos from recipes I picked up in Mexico and along the Texas border when I lived down there.  I like making grandma's Arkansas Apple Pie and my own Chicken Au Gratten or Shepherds Pie.  My biggest problem is when the holidays come around and people find out I'm cooking.  Instead of cooking for seven I usually end up cooking for 20 or 30 people because the neighborhood, friends and family from all around come visiting.

  16. I generally cook from scratch.  I'm not a chef but I love to cook.  My hubby loves my stir fry's.  Usually made with brown rice, veggies and meat.

  17. I only use the microwave to heat up something quickly or start to defrost meat.  I'd never even consider actually making a meal in the microwave, especially meat......  I cook, from scratch, 5 nights a week

  18. I wouldn,t say I adored cooking but I like to do a roast dinner with all the usual trimmings,or a good rich beef stew.My microwave is generally used for heating stuff up or on odd occasions cooking scrambled eggs.

  19. I am from a country where we never microwave food except for reheating.

    I always cook from scratch.

I love making shrimp scampi, spinach and walnut stuffed chicken b*****s, quiche with any variations of ingredients in it, lasagne and crabmeat/lobster bisque.

I also love to make fabulous desserts from scratch including tiramisu.

My bf is one lucky man lol!

  20. I usually do not buy convenience foods and make everything from scratch.

    Here is somthing you may want to try;

    Aloe Jam

Cut the older leaves from the stem where the leaves are thickest

Place upright with cut end to the bottom so that as much sap can drain as is possible. Stand for a day or so...

Trim point edges and tips so that the portions that are left would all be about 10 mm thick, otherwise the pieces are too thin tomake jam from...

Cut the white or transparent pieces in to about 30 mm squares and peel each one from top to bottom

Soak in clean water for a few hours, and rinse under running water when done. There must be no yellowy bits left afer rinsing.

Prick each portion well with a fork

Lie overnight in lime rich water by adding 2 table spoons of lime powder to the water that covers the aloe. Lime is generally available from pharmacies.

Idealy you would dissolve lime in warm water before adding to aloe portions.

Next day, rinse aloe portions again in running water

    Weigh out the following;

For every 2,7 KG aloe, you would use 3.2 KG sugar

About 4 table spoons of lemon juice is handy because it would preven jam turning in to sand sugar.

Boil aloe for about 30 minutes in clean water and drain.

In the mean while, do the syrup...

Add the portions of aloe one by one so that the sypur does not stop boiling

Allow to simmer for about 1 ½ hours until aloe portions become transperant and the syrup thickens.

Stand the aloe portion in the syrup over night so that the aloe can absorb the syrup.

Next day, remove the aloe while heating the syrup again. Replace the aloe portions back in to syrup once it is heated.

    Bring to the boil.

Place the aloe portions in to hot, sterilized bottles and cover with syrup before sealing.

  21. I like to cook everything from scratch - we never have microwave meals, and rarely get takeaways.

My favourite thing to cook....hmm, thats tricky because I really like trying new recipes!  Perhaps a curry would be my favourite - it tastes so good made from scratch.  Or a chicken tagine with preserved lemons which smells so lemony and good!

I do love to bake as well, so I love making all things cakey and sweet!

  22. I cook from scratch and one of my favourites is macaroni cheese - nearly always served with chips.

  23. I cook dinner every night.  Some of my favourites are: Duck with orange sauce (the secret is the half glass of Cointreau), leg of lamb with rosemary, and skate (the fish) cooked in milk and nutmeg.  I make them all from scratch using fresh ingredients.

They're all really yummy and go down great with my girlfriend and my daughter!
