Do you go running/jogging?

I'd really love to start because I just quit dancing and I'm already getting out of shape. (I play netball but it's not much) I need to do some form of exercise so I thought I'd try running around the park/neighbourhood. I just have a few problems...

-I'm 15. Is it weird for a 15 year old girl to be running? Most of the people who I see running are like 20-30 so it's kind of embarrassing =/

-How can I avoid running into people I know??..What do you do if you're like running around the park and then all of a sudden your friend turns up because she's walking her dog?

-My parents aren't really supportive of it. This is kind of weird but is there any way I can kind of run in secret?

-Oh and I also find the whole idea of running in public kind of embarrassing? How can I get over this!?

I'm also open for suggestions of any other type of exercise that I could possibly do..yoga? aerobics? etc.

Thankyou! =]

  1. -It's not weird that you're 15 and run!! It's brilliant! There are loads of cross country events people your age compete in. It's good that you are getting fit early on.

    - If you live in the countryside - run down country lanes they aren't as busy and you won't run into people as much. However if someone does turn up...so what? At least you're making an attempt to get fit! Or you could just run off in the opposite direction...wear a mask...a hat...disguise?

-Why aren't your parents supportive? Run when they go to work? Say you're going to your friends and leave without them seeing you in your gear?

    - DISGUISE!!!! anyway you shouldn't be embarassed it's brilliant that you are making an attempt - running is a great sport and people who run are great! (can you tell I'm a runner?)

    Anyway....I vote disguise...fake moustache....balaclava....sunglasses...a cloak..

  2. Play basketball. If you can actually get a good game going with friends, it can become a real workout.

  3. swim

  4. Jogging! I love jogging!

  5. Well although that you see running more in the older age it is still good for your health!

  6. I dont think its weird at all..... its great that you want to get into running and keep fit!!

If you run early in the morning perhaps before school you can avoid people you know.

Also why dont you check out if there are any running clubs or athletics clubs in your area. Its a great way to get involved in running!

  7. i'm 18 and i'm was in same deal, stopped rowing coz couldn't afford it and needed something free to keep me fit. I run all the time, around neighborhood ect like you describe....It's great if you have music....I also get the feeling I'm the only one my age doing it but who cares, i find you feel much less self concious if you just get lost in your music.

    - oh and build up time, i started at just 1 hr, now i run for about 4 if have time....a good incentive is having a destination....makes you stick to your guns and do it... :) please give it a shot, us neighborhood-runners numbers are dwindling.

  8. You shouldn't be afraid of running, its a sign of staying in shape and caring about your body. If you don't wanna run into people you know find a park or a field/track to run around. And about overcoming the "embarrassing" part about it... don't really know how you can get over the fact that your basically  working out. :(

    Edit: Running as in Jogging.

  9. I took up jogging as part of losing weight, i did very well and my fitness was a lot better, i found it embarrassing as i live in a village where everyone recognises you, i did get the usual run Forest run,  but kept at it and people started to take no notice, seems more people jog here now than when i first started, even my 15 yr old son. The only downside i had is that my right knee started to give me problems so i have recently taken up cycling instead, i actually prefer it and it is easier on the knees, Don't worry about others just plug in your mp3 player and go for it.

  10. when i first started running i went to the local running track at 6.30am - noone was around so felt ok..... not i just listen to music and dont really case what peeps think...

  11. Maybe you should get your workout in early, like 6am, that way you dont get embarrassed

  12. runnin is amazing for the body and if u c sombody uk then just wave to them and keep running unless they say something

  13. well if you had a trendmill in your house you will be less embarrased because you can go as fast as you want and slow!

  14. i jog and run. same with my cousin she is only 13 and she runs and jogs with her friends or something. so maybe u should do it with ur friends u might feel less embarassed

  15. I see lots of teens running.  You should get one or more of your friends into running with you.  You shouldn't be embarrassed, it's good for your health.

Aerobics and yoga are on early morning T.V. (usually on PBS at about 5 or 6 A.M.) you can watch them and see if you would rather do that, but you should get some people together and run every day too.

If you really don't want to run in public, brisk walking is good, and people don't have to know that you're doing it for health or weight, they will just think you're going someplace.

  16. Yes, I do go running. I'm 15 years old and I run 3-5 miles 5 days a week around my neighborhood. I don't think people think it's weird...=)

When you see your friends, just say hey and wave. That's what I do, because my friends are out a lot while I'm running.

Sometimes I go for runs when my parents aren't home, but I don't think you should keep it a secret from them, as they won't trust you if they find out. As long as they're not forbidding you, then keep running!Try joining track or XC; then you'll have an excuse because they can't disapprove of supporting your school!

As far as the embarrassing thing...why?!?!? You're out there  running! That makes you like 400 times cooler than anyone whos not. They're the ones that should be embarrassed.

I think you should stick with running. Try running some races. It's so much cooler than yoga.
