Question:

Do YOU know the difference between an 'international dialing code' and a 'country code'?

95% of Brits I know who go abroad, quote their foreign number as 'zero zero eight six, etc. And that is totally wrong for half the world! 00, is the int. dialing code FOR THE UK!

People should say 'Plus eight six...' and so on. It is a mistake even the girl at Barclays International Banking makes, and don't you think SHE should know better?

Drives me crazy.

  1. 00 is not the dialling code for the UK, 44 is. 0044, on the other hand, is perfectly well understood by every telephone in the UK and Europe.

And how do I know it's not the dialling code? Because my sister lives in France, and the country code is prefixed by 00. Or plus, if you're being picky.

Can't help but think it would be a tad confusing if two countries had the same code... which is what would be the case if what you are claiming as fact was actually correct.

No, you didn't say two countries had the same code, you said that the dialing code for the UK was 00, and it isn't.

You also didn't say you had a ruddy huge chip on your shoulder about it, when you clearly do.

Get your ego under control, and wake up to the realisation that practically no one else in the world actually gives a toss if the woman at Barclays International Banking gets it wrong or not. The fact that YOU think she should know better is a matter for you, and you only, since you appear to be the only person who gives a stuff about it. If you're that bothered about her apparent lack of education, perhaps you should complain to Barclays? It would be substantially better than bothering everyone on here with your petty complaints.

Ah... the default position of the ignorant. Petty insults. Ooh, I'm hurt.... It doesn't make me look bad, it makes you look like you are incapable of justifying your position.

  2. International dialling code is the code used to access the system: usually 00.

Country code is 1,2 or 3 digit number, i.e. 44 for UK.

  3. International Dialing Codes

If you need to make a phone call to someone in another country and you are not quite sure how to dial the number, then this service should hopefully help you.

  4. how to dial anaother country usually depends on what country you're calling from and how your calling these days. could be 00, could be 001, even through voip, it could just be a +, it's how your country's phone system recognizes an international call ffrom a misdialled internal number, then the country code so it knows what country. blah blah blah.
