  1.      Well washing your hamster in the sink may not kill them but you have to be very careful. You would need to use shampoo or soap safe for them and also need to dry him off well or he (or she) may get a cold. Granted because of their size it does not take very long for their health to deteriorate if they do catch a cold.

But yes it is true and perfectly safe for them to bath in sand. I think it is easiest if you buy a small dust/sand bath container from your local pet store because the minute your lil hammy hits that bath... it goes everywhere! Ha ha! They have so much fun in there rolling about, and the bath containers you buy are see through so it's increadibly fun to watch as well! (Bath containers are usually anywhere from $2 - $5 and varry in size)

I believe it's best if you buy the sand at the pet store as well. I guess grabbing a pile of sand out of the neighbour's sandbox might do but you never know how sanitary it is. There are two main choices to choose from when buying small animal baths. There's bath dust, and bath sand. I asked a hamster expert at the nearest petland which they thought was better. They said that the bath dust gets a bit too dusty for hamsters and can clog their respritory sistem. There for the bath sand if better! (bath sand/dust is about $5 - $8)

I hope I was of some help!!! :)

  2. That is correct that you NEVER bathe a hamster in ANY liquid unless instructed to be the vet.

The sand you pour into the bowl cannot just be any sand, it has to be Chinchilla dust/sand.

  3. idk

  4. Use chinchilla sand bath. It is perfectly safe for them and some hamsters may like rolling around in it.

  5. I don't think its very good for them but i suppose you could but its really not necessary cause hamsters clean themselves so you don't need to and definitely don't give them dust bathes for chinchilla it is very BAD for them cause they will inhale it and get it in their lungs which will be bad

  6. You are smart to not want to bath with water.  Don't use sand because it is too rough for them.  Use Chinchilla dust.  I get mine at PetSmart. The Kaytee brand is great.  I also used it to give my gerbil dust baths.  They have containers you can buy for dust baths.

  7. Not sand, dust. It really doesn't matter what kind of hamster you have, all hammy's enjoy dust bathing and it's really not necessary but its fun to watch them do somersaults in them. Just make sure that the dust is antibacterial, and they sell those specifically for chinchillas at Petco and petsmart.

  8. no, not sand. Get Chinchilla dust bath (sold at most pet stores) let your hamster roll around in that.
