Question:

Do You Think That Female Dogs Protect The Home Better Than Male Dogs?

I am mainly talking about the Gaurd Dog Breeds but I am happy to hear of any dog breeds. Even though the Female's are usually a lot smaller I wonder if they are naturally more protective. What are your thoughts on this?

  1. It's more a matter of individual temperament than gender.  I've had very assertive female collies that guard as well as any Doberman.  I've had laid back males that like everyone.  But I"ve also had the reverse, and with Aussies there's no clear cut distinction in protectiveness and s*x. The exception is a mama with puppies.  She will become way more aggressive protecting her puppies from strangers than she would normally be.  This fades as the puppies get older and more independent.

  2. I'm going to say yes.  After the age of two, females come into their very protective modes.  Males are there too, but get lazier as they age.

  3. I have 2 Chihuahua's..one female and one male.. My male is very territorial, and he will not allow anyone he doesnt know, or even know very well come near me or my female. He gets agressive. My female is a shaker. She shakes all the time. shes kind of a nervous dog so she isnt agressive at all.. atleast not right now because she is only 7 months old.

  4. In general, yes, I believe that females tend to be more protective of their home and family due to maternal instinct.  Of course there are exceptions for individual dogs, personality and age must also be considered... breed could be a factor as well.  I know that boxer males generally make horrible guard dogs because they're just too darn friendly ;) protecting the home just comes more naturally to females.

  5. Not in a house where you have a Male and a Female.  Not in my fifteen years of owning Bull Terriers any way.

They sleep better than the males though.

  6. no necessarily are females more protective. It depends on the individual dog.

  7. Ive had several pairs of male dogs (bulls, collies, labs) and female dogs (chows, labs, bulls) and to me there is no question that females are way more protective of their owners than males.  Males seemed to care lots about their own territory and dusting it up with other dogs but females though less aggressive only until a certain point then they are much more about protecting me and allow no one within 5 feet of me unless i say its okay.,    They also good at warnings make it plain to anyone who knocks that they are not "girlie dogs"

    Id go with females.

Males are more protective of territory than people

  8. Not necessarily. Female dogs are naturally more protective of their pups. But humans aren't pups and they've been taught to obey commands. But it can depend on the relationship between the dog and the human. My female dog is protective of me, but my other female dog is happy-go-lucky and very outgoing. But, I do not train guard dogs and there very well may be a slight difference.
