Personaly I think that JJ is bound to win a Grand Slam sometime but for now don't you think it would help. She is getting overly criticed for beining number 1 without winning anything. Some people think that getting a gold medal means more than a grand slam. And if she wins will people think she is deserving to be number one?

  1. if she won gold, more people will have to respect her. However, I feel like she's going to have a win a grand slam to really have those who doubt her on her side. But I HIGHLY doubt if she wins gold...HIGHLY. Mostly because she doesn't have the experience in big finals like the big contenders have such as Venus, Serena and Safina. Usually I don't think being in the final already helps out but this arena has more people than at a normal grand slam which means more noise from the fans which means she's going to have to really really concentrate on her game, which I don't think she is capable of doing.

  2. the olympics will be a great start for jankovic to  step things up, build her mental toughness and show the world why she has the greatest defense and great all court variety.....

I think if she does win the olympic Gold, does pass some tough tests for other opponents she will somewhat justify why she is number one.. and then that will be the start of building something better.. like a grand slam win... but first thing is first..

  3. i don't think she has to win anything to be respected... she already tries so hard and deserves to be #1...:)))

  4. Jelena works hard. Probably plays the most tournament matches of any big player and has simply accumulated the points to get her to #1. Why should she be denied the ranking because she hasn't won a slam? We all know rankings are fleeting and to keep the spot she will need to perform at her absolute best. Let her enjoy the fruits of her labors. Getting Gold at the Olympics would we great for sure -- it would certainly help those who don't understand the situation believe she should be where she is.

  5. Winning a gold at the Olympics or a Slam will definitely boost Jankovic's unorthodox # 1 ranking. She will collect a Slam soon in her archive, unless injuries prevent her to do so.  Women's ranking up to # 5 is very close in points. A lot can happen from now until the US Open. A Slam is as precious as a gold at the Olympics, IMO, although they carry different aspects.

  6. like you said it would definitely help if she won gold.  I really like Jelena, even though she hasn't won anything, she always does well, and that's what makes her great, her consistency.

  7. NO she has to win a slam to get respect from tennis fans.

  8. yup

  9. I think she wins a gold then she deserves to be #1. She has all the time in her career until she retires to win slams which I think she can do it. Just by winning a slam, it will make her a deserved #1 - not an impressive #1 as Serena and others, but an ok #1.

  10. While she goes somewhat respected for her drive, determination,a nd talent, she will need to certainly win these Olympics, which she wont, to prove she is capable of being number one as well as winning a Slam. She has committed herself to train better, get stronger so she can compete with the big girls who she admits she has problems against being they are more powerful. IN a bit of time she should fair well, but right now she only gets to a certain point, and then thats it.

She is facing the hottest player in the quarters, in Safina, and even if she gets through that match, has to still face Williams Sisters, Dementieva, Na, Zvonereva. Not easy at all, and for her especially.

For someone who was going to pull out, she certainly is doing well. I sometimes think she likes to say these things to throw off her competition. I mean to play this well, when having the thought, possibility of pulling out of this event, is a question mark, along with her usual on court antics of calling a trainer and so forth.

  11. Yeah it'll help but people will still claim Ana and Maria wern't playing. She needs to put ina good showing at the Olympics and the US - preferably win. Jelena has my respect, but she possibly wouldn't if tennis was of a higher standard. I don;t know why people are criticising her so much- she didn't actually make the rankign system like that, it is beyond her control. To me, shes just as good a number 1 as Ivanovic... not very good, but good enough for now.

Does anyone else think Serena and Venus are really just streaks ahead of the other girls. In truth, they are the 1st and 2nd best players, they just dont play enuf.

  12. It would help boost her image. This isn't the first time that a world number 1 hasn't won a grandslam. When Ivanovic became number 1 she hasn't won any Grand Slam that time.

  13. To win respect she not only has 2 win olympic bt has 2 win grand slams also......

She might take the no. 1 spot bt I don't think she will able 2 win the heart of the fans like Serena  / Justin / Steffi / Martina--which they have earned by thr continuous victory n gr8 playing.
