Question:

Do You Think That Taiwan Should be Independent of China?

From 1949 to 1971, Taiwan was treated by the United Nations as the sole representative of China (including the part on the mainland), and the United States recognized it as such until 1979. The Red Chinese government, on the other hand, maintains, and the United States through the Shanghai Communique and otherwise, recognizes that Taiwan is part of China and that there is but one China. Yet, for almost 60 years, Taiwan has been functionally and practically independent of the mainland. Shouldn't that political reality be recognized? This is a theoretical discussion only. I am NOT proposing that any action be taken by anyone.

  1. I think so.

I'd also like to see Tibet, Nepal and Mongolia be independent provinces.

But I'm not holding my breath.

  2. Yes, way past time.

  3. I don't see why anything that may have once been a part of an already huge nation should participate in the Chinese political agenda. The Chinese have already expressed a desire merely  to remain in power, for its own sake while tolerating a far more successful form of self regulation within their own borders. Its' really about control and benefits no one but those who through military might refuse to relinquish power.
