Do a lot of Olympic athletes leave Beijing before the closing ceremony?

I only ask this before Nastia and Phelps are leaving before closing and I was curious to know if this was common practice.

  1. Some have never been anywhere near Beijing [ the equestrian events were held in Hong Kong, over 1,000 kilometers away ] !


  2. It is up to the athletes whether they stay or go.  Most will stay if they have no competitions coming up.  Those that do usually leave after they are done.

  4. Yes, it is perfectly common. Some people are already going home and being received as heroes.

  5. Yes, in all olympics, there were many participants who left before the closing ceremony.
