Do a lot of people get jealous when they see true friendship?

It seems like I've observed many people (especially women) tend to get jealous when they see two people who seem to be true/lifelong friends. Why is that? (other than insecurity)

I would have said most were envious - they would like something like that themselves. Some people will naturally resent other's good fortune and that resentment comes to rest on the person, because it's easier to resent others than your own situation (and by implication, possibly yourself). This is not, incidently, a trait more common to either gender. Maybe the typical causes of jealousy change, though.
