Do a need a valid passport to apply US citizenship from permanent residence?

I am a US permanent resident and holding a expired passport from my country. Do I need to renew the password before I apply US citizenship?

You don't need at all a passport to apply for US citizenship .

No.  You may use your expired passport as documentation during the naturalization process.
