  1. They have probably already breed and are looking for a place to drop their eggs. I have a black convict and a white convict which are 2 different types of cichlids and they did the stone picking up thing before having about 30 babies. Beware if you have a male and a female they will continue to mate and so will their babies. Sometimes you can sell the babies to local pet shops which is what I've done with some

  2. Scianochromis fryeri or Ahli (Electric Blue) are Africans btw.  You really need to know what the other fish is.  African cichlid doesn't say much as I just pointed out, the Electric Blue IS an African too.  It's a Lake Malawi Hap.

You need to provide what the other species is.  In the case of like an Electric Yellow, should this be the one you have, there is a decent chance of producing very worthless cross breeds.  Cross breeding is something you DONT want to have happen.

Is it normal to dig in the substrate?  Absolutely.

Ms. is way off base here.  The vast majority of Africans do NOT lay eggs.  Most are maternal mouthbrooders.  To further emphasize this, my "teacher" so to say or rather the gentlemen I learned everything I know about cichlids from, pointed out, I'd like to clarify, Africans are not livebearers either.  There are some egg layers, but not many, but mostly all are mouthbrooders.

  3. Electric blue cichlids are a type of African cichlids (unless you are talking abut the electric blue Jack Dempsey) and will try to spawn with any closely related species of cichlids, if they are closely related then they can have babies, maybe not fertile though.

Black and white striped convicts are the same species as the pink convicts and can and do interbreed freely.
