  1. YES!

The exact process depends on the airport.  Some have the machines right by the ticket counters and you hand your bag off to them, they run it through a machine and then slap it on the belt to be sorted out and put on the appropriate airplane.

However, some cities don't have this set up and that's all done in the back.  Rest assured- it IS done.  You typically get a little "love note" from the TSA inside your bag saying they opened your bag and looked through your things.  Nothing more comforting than that, right?  Happened to me almost every time I went to Spokane since that's their set up.

Typically they only open the bag if they need to take a look since manually inspecting each one takes awhile.  If they are out where you can see them and it makes you feel better, stay until you see your  bags on the belt again.  That way if they do need to open it up you can watch them.  Otherwise- anything goes.

They typically don't have time to really mess with your stuff or take anything interesting. However- I always believe it's a bad idea to check valuables.  I did have 2 granola bars stolen once. lol!

  2. Yes, by x-ray and random checks

  3. They will open up your suitcase and dig around.  I just zip-locs and sealable bags to keep things organized.  It also makes it easier for them to rifle through to see if I'm carrying anything dangerous (yeah right...).
