  3. mine ddnt, i take Ativan and prozac. they help for me, and i havent gained weight which was very important seeing as i take them for an eating disorder. they really help, but im still not off them two years later.

  4. Not really... my cousin went to the doctor and he actually prescribed her some anti-anxiety pills to lose some weight! in her case its cause the doctor noticed that she eats when she's feeling nervous about something, so an anti-anxiety pill helped her on that

  5. No, not all anxiolytics cause you to gain weight.

I do not belive buspar (used to treat generalized anxiety) causes weight gain.

However, your physician should be able to help you select a anti anxiety medication that has a side effect profile that is ok for you.

    Good luck.

  6. Anxiety medication generally doesn't cause weight gain.  However anxiety meds (the benzodiazepines) are very addictive.  But, taking a pill is better than having an anxiety attack.

As far as anti-depressants, they all have the potential for weight gain.  The SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, etc.) can all cause weight gain after long-term use.  I've read that Lexapro is a little less likely to cause weight gain.  Wellbutrin does not cause weight gain; in fact, it can induce weight loss.  But it's not an ideal drug.  It can cause your anxiety to worsen to levels you really don't want, especially if anxiety is one of your primary complaints.

If your doctor does prescribe an anti-depressant, tell him you want the one least likely to cause weight gain (probably Lexapro).  Also, once you start feeling better, you may be able to get yourself on an exercise routine that can combat the potential for weight gain.  Exercise itself helps with depression, though it's not a cure-all.

    Good luck!
