Question:

Do all cars come with a spare tyre?

My girlfriend is defiant that there is no spare tyre to replace the flat... Wouldn't there be one under the carpet in the boot? Or does this not apply to all cars?

The car in question is a Mitsubishi Shogun Sport Warrior that was recently bought (used).

  1. New they will, but second hand it's up to you to check, and it's illegal nowadays not to have one.

It should be on the back door, as in the photo....

  2. most modern cars have no spare wheel unbelievable but true, they now supply the vehicle with a spray similar to tyre weld which in their eyes will get you out of sticky situations

  3. all vehicles come with a spare wheel and tyre and in most cases it is in the boot under the carpet. if your girlfriend hasnt got one she wants to go back to the person she bought the car from and ask what has happened to it. it could mean it has been used and the original never replaced, or more sinister that the car was involved in an undisclosed accident .

  4. No, alot of new cars now come with a kit, that pumps foam into a deflated tyre so its possible to drive, of course you need to get it straight to a repairers once this is done.

So its obviously not a legal requirement to have a spare tyre, if you have this kit, my dad's X5 has no spare, my car has no spare, they are both brand new and both come with this kit, whether your car is the same ??

  5. It's under the boot floor, released from inside the boot.

  6. I thought it was illegal not to have a spare tyre? On another point..........why has she bought such a C%$P car? :)

  7. its law you should have a spare wheel.!!

  8. all cars should have a spare tyre when you buy them, if it's bought used it is bought as seen so if it hasn't got one it's up to you to get one, don't leave it to late because murphy's law say's you will get a puncture.

  9. no they dont all come with a spare but most do.... have one of some kind... if there is a place for it.... it might have had one and was used and throwed away

  10. if it has run flat tires maybe not,

Its probably mounted under the chassis where she didnt look

  11. if it not brand new then maybe the last owner forgot to replace all news cars do come with spare tyres. would it not have been easier tog o look in your gf's boot than asking us

  13. Despite some remarkable ignorance shown in some of the answers here, it is in fact NOT a legal requirement to have a spare tyre on a car in the U.K.

You are simply required to have some device that allows the car to be driven to a location where the puncture can be repaired or the tyre replaced.

This can be a full-sized spare wheel, a half-sized spare wheel, fitted run-flat tyres or a get-you-home repair kit.

  14. To my knowledge, all cars comes with a spare tyre.

  15. I thought it was a legal requirement

  16. I'm not reading all the answers so for but...

    There are 3 possible solutions.

    1. It should have a normal size spare wheel

    2. It should have a 'spacesaver' spare wheel, that's a thin emergency wheel which is designed as a 'get you to home / garage' solution, at a stated maximum safe speed.

3 It doesn't have a spare wheel but should have either 'run flat' tyres where you can run on a flat tyre at a stated maximum speed safely  OR  it has an aerosol of solution which when sprayed into the tyre valve, re-inflates the tyre (not necessarily fully) in order to get you home or to a garage.

  17. Yes, there is always a compartment for a spare tire. It will be in the trunk, under the carpet for a car and sometimes for a suv/truck, they are under the car in a carriage.

Most cars have a place for it but don't have one. It depends on if the owner had bought one and maintained it while the car was in their car. I always have one in my cars and trust me, put a good sturdy jack in there also - just in case. Some cars come with a crappy little jack that honestly is more hazardous then helpful.

  18. No. And despite what people say there is no law either (in the UK at least) that says they have to. Frankly the law doesn't care about you being stranded by the side of the road, so long as the tyres on each corner are safe the rest is the owner's problem.

Manufacturers can offer whatever they like. My car has a pump and foam arrangement (as one of the other contributors says) and my last one had runflat tyres. Neither had a spare.

Shoguns tend to have the spare on a frame mounted to the back due to the size of the wheel. Those with a pickup tray have the spare in a frame under the bed that can be lowered when needed.

  19. There are many high-end cars now that have what the manufacturers call "run flat tires." These tires can run up to 100 - 200 miles, enough to get you where you need to go, and not get stranded. There is a lining inside these tires that self-seals the tire if a puncture occurs. The purpose of having run flat tires is to save weight on vehicles, to get better fuel economy and better performance. You need to find out from your girlfriend if she has these "run flat tires." If not, she needs to get a spare so as not to take a chance of getting a flat tire.

  20. I have never heard of a car not having a spare wheel when bought new.

Some cars have a special spare wheel that is for emergencies just to get you to the garage.

Mitsubishi Shogun's all have spare wheels.  The previous owners have probably still got it.   See if you can contact them and ask for it. You will need a spare for the MOT test.

  21. Most Shogun Challengers and Sports had the spare wheel in a carrier under the back end - you need a special brace to let it down - it's listed as underfloor in the attached PDF document, which is the original Sport brochure (in "Exterior Features, Styling" which is part way down page 26) http://www.lease2u.co.uk/brochures/CARS/...

As others have said, there's no legal requirement to have a spare wheel/tyre on UK vehicles, though I would strongly advise getting one if yours is missing - call me a pessimist but you never know when the worst is going to happen!

Vauxhall, Renault, Fiat and Kia (amongst others) all supply vehicles with no spare and without run-flat tyres, meaning you're shafted if you have a puncture that's too big to "plug" with the puncture-repair fluid included, or if you crack a rim or split the tyre's sidewall.

  22. Not all vehicles come with a spare wheel. Some new sports cars are so compact there is not enough room for a spare wheel. A second hand car may not have a spare wheel if some body took it out and forgot to replace it. It it not a legal requirement to carry a spare wheel in the UK, only that it is of a legal tread if carried. Shoguns usually carry the spare attached to the rear door, I think. If not look under the vehicle.
