Question:

Do all crank arms fit all chainring interfaces?

I have a crankarm set on my bike, and i have bent the crankarm WITHOUT the chainring interface (I was hit by a car). I need to get a new arm (Unless any professionals know how to bend it back?). I have a TRUVATIV Isoflow set. I wondered what crank arms i could get to fit the Chainring, do they all fit?

Because if i replace one with a different one, i might as well make it symetrical, but i don't want to replace the chainring interface.

(Btw the bicycle shop quoted me £80 to get the damned thing fixed...so ill do it myself with a crank puller :P )

Thanks alot,

  1. The same Truvativ crank arm will fit exactly. I could straighten it and have done before.I am in Glasgow.

  2. that isnt a high end crank.  your best bet is to just replace the crankset.  you'll find you can buy a complete crank for virtually the same price as both arms, because manufacturers put a premium on selling the whole thing rather than the parts.

  3. Get a new crankset to be sure it will match the other side.

Older bikes are square taper, newer ones are octalink or isis, or even newer is hollow tec II. Just take the old one off and ave a look.

Chain reactions is a good place to buy stuff ( free postage too )

Edit : is this the same as yours ? £22 including the gears :-)

  4. Don't bother with trying to bend the crank arm back. It will be pretty hard to do, and you'd put a bunch of tool marks on it during the process of holding it and forcing it back into position.

Not only that, but the crank arm will be severely weakened by being stressed this way ~ it's better to just replace it. I don't think you can buy just one crank arm, I think you will be forced to buy the whole crankset.

If that's the case, most cranksets come with chainrings, so your problem is solved. But the answer to your question is no. Not all chainrings fit all crank arms. There are a few different bolt patterns out there. You need to know what size you have.

Another thing to consider is the style of your bottom bracket. This is the bearing and shaft assembly that your cranks attach to. Some bottom brackets are a tapered square, and others are splined. Again, you need to know what you have so that you can buy the right style crankset.

  5. It sounds like the arm that was bent is on the chain ring side. If so this makes for a little more difficulty. If it's the non crank side all you need is just the arm. You can replace just the arm on the crank side, but it's a little more difficult and normally its sold as a set. My suggestion is to buy a new (same) crank. TruVativ is a nice solid crank, you can always keep the left crank arm as a spear. If you decide on a non TruVativ product FSA makes a nice line as well.
