do all earthquakes have an aftershock?

how long after an earthquake would you feel one and are they weaker or stronger?

this is in refrence to the 5.4 quake we just had near redding ,ca at 8pm just wondering if we should expect more

  1. In the main quake there is a  movement of the earth to relieve stress. This shift then produces stress in nearby faults  which will then move causing the aftershocks. They usually occur but can vary a lot in intensity are sometimes almost as strong as the original quake and sometimes too weak to feel.


  2. Larger ones tend to but they all don't.  That is big enough that it probably will and the next one might be larger but that is not usual.

  3. no some earthquakes can have only one quake

  4. Most do, but it's not guaranteed.

  5. many earthquakes have smaller aftershocks. sometimes, though, a small earthquake leads to an even bigger aftershock.
