Question:

Do all the top draft picks go on to be great players?

I would love to know the top two or three draft picks from the last ten years to see how good they've become. I don't really follow the draft but remember a few names like Riewoldt and Hodge and love following their careers.

  1. Here are the number 1 draft picks for the last 15 years:

1992 - Drew Banfield (West Coast)

    1993 - Darren Gaspar (Sydney)

    1994 - Jeff White (Fremantle)

    1995 - Clive Waterhouse (Fremantle)

1996 - Michael Gardiner (West Coast)

    1997 - Travis Johnstone (Melbourne)

1998 - Des Headland (Brisbane Lions)

    1999 - Josh Fraser (Collingwood)

2000 - Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda)

    2001 - Luke Hodge (Hawthorn)

2002 - Brendon Goddard (St Kilda)

2003 - Adam Cooney (Western Bulldogs)

    2004 - Brett Deledio (Richmond)

    2005 - Marc Murphy (Carlton)

    2006 - Bryce Gibbs (Carlton)

They have had varying levels of success, but I think its fair to say that none of these guys have been complete duds. Whether they have all becomes "greats" or not is a different question - you'd definitely struggle to find too many people apart from me and Dennis Commetti who think Clive Waterhouse was one of the game, for instance.

  2. a few i can think of are

    adam cooney no.1

    luke ball no.1

    bryce gibbs no.1

    luke livingston no.1

    g p***k no.1

    marc murphy no.1

    daniel wells no.1

    brett deledio no.1

    josh fraser no.1

    luke hodge no.2

    chris judd no.3

  3. Not all top picks are guaranteed to become great players. It really depends. It is great following young players but I don't really look at which number they were chosen at.

  4. you can find just about all of the drafts on wikipedia. but i reckon that in 97 - 2000 the top picks did not develop into the kind of players that the the top 3 picks since then. but even in the last 5 or so years there have been some top picks who have just not developed to the high standards that are set for them, like Fiora,  Tim Walsh, Jared Brennan, and more recently Roughead and Josh Kennedy have not impressed me too much, but they are still real young and the tall blokes take longer to develop.

  5. definately not there was that ...player who got done for drugs and virtually neva played now is kicked out of carlton i think.....fitzgerald....the guy from big brother wasnt a no.1 but was high and only played like 10 games though did kick five on debut for sydney many of the no1 draft picks when they started were only mediocre players though last 10 years has been a lot better
