Do all waves have barrels?

do all waves have barrels? i know all of them don't but do the ones that have fairly big waves, like in orzan in la coruna?

  1. I'm pretty sure, technically, all waves have barrels. You can't say, surf all barels, but all waves (not including swells) have crests, so i believe that they all have barrels...Hope I helped!!


  2. no, all breaking waves, even large ones, do not have barrels.  the formation of a barrel depends on the bottom contour.  if there is a gradual change in depth of the water then the wave will simply crumble as it breaks and not lurch up and out to create a barrel.  it also depends on the direction of the wind.  certain waves may be hollow on an ofshore wind  beacuse the face gets held up longer, but durring an onshore wind may be crumbly c**p to try and get tubed in (yet can make for awesome launch ramps and landing pads for arials)
