Do all whammy bars alter the pitch the same way?

I have a Squire Stratocasters and when i press down on it the pitch goes higher instead of lower. Is this normal?

you should nt have to push down on it mate it should be loose  when it is loose pull up to squil and down to release the strings the pitch should nt go lower only highter and then back to tune
